More tips for introducing your child to the letters through letter coloring pages

As children learn about the alphabet, the very first step is learning what each letter looks like. Letter coloring pages are a wonderful way to create a customized alphabet display in your home that your child can refer to often as he practices identifying each letter.

A few simple tips will help your child get the most out of these letter coloring pages:

Use your finger to trace the letter. When you introduce your child to a new letter, use your index finger to trace along the middle of each letter (as opposed to tracing along the outside or inside of the letter’s outline). After you have traced each letter, hold your child’s hand with his index finger extended and help him trace over the letter also. By tracing over the letter, he will discover which letters have long, straight lines and which letters have loops and curves.

Discuss the difference between uppercase and lowercase letters. Take a minute when introducing your child to the featured letter to explain how each letter can be written in uppercase or lowercase. It is not important to explain to preschool- and kindergarten-aged children how the first letter in the first word of a sentence is uppercase or how proper nouns are written with the first letter of the word in uppercase. But you do want to make sure your child is aware that each letter can be written in either uppercase or lowercase and that both formats represent the same letter.

Talk about the pictures on the letter coloring page. Each letter coloring page has two engaging pictures that begin with the letter being highlighted on that page. Depending on your child’s age, you can ask him to identify the pictures and guess what letter they begin with (the two big letters in the middle of the page will be a nice clue!) or you can tell your child the name of each picture and explain how they begin with the letter featured on the middle of the page.

Start coloring. There is no wrong way to color in the letters on a letter coloring page! Your child can be creative and try to color the letter P coloring page with a purple crayon or the letter R coloring page with a red crayon, but that’s certainly not necessary. The goal of this activity is to make sure your child is having fun while getting gradual exposure to the letter featured on the page.

Display the completed letter coloring page. When your child is done coloring in the letter on the page, find somewhere to display or save the completed page. You can tape the completed coloring page to your child’s bedroom wall or on the refrigerator, anywhere your child will see it. Each time your child see it, it will be one more opportunity for him to be exposed to what the letter looks like as well as see a few pictures that begin with the featured letter. This casual exposure will help solidify your child’s comfort identifying each letter.
